Hyperbolic Orbifolds of Minimal Volume
We provide a survey of hyperbolic orbifolds of minimal volume, starting with the results of Siegel in two dimensions and with the contributions of Gehring, Martin and others in three dimensions. For higher dimensions, we summarise some of the most important results, due to Belolipetsky, Emery and Hild, by discussing related features such as hyperbolic Coxeter groups, arithmeticity and consequen...
متن کاملBianchi Orbifolds of Small Discriminant
Let OD be the ring of integers in the imaginary quadratic field Q( √ D) of discriminant D < 0. Then PGL2(OD) is a discrete subgroup of the isometry group PSL2(C) (= PGL2(C)) of hyperbolic 3-space H3 . The quotient space H/PGL2(OD) = XD is topologically a noncompact 3-manifold whose cusps (ends) are of the form S × [0,∞). The number of cusps of XD is known to be hD , the class number of OD . So ...
متن کاملThe Topology of locally volume collapsed 3-Orbifolds
In this thesis we study the geometry and topology of Riemannian 3-orbifolds which are locally volume collapsed with respect to a curvature scale. Our main result is that a sufficiently collapsed closed 3-orbifold without bad 2-suborbifolds satisfies Thurston’s Geometrization Conjecture. We also prove a version of this result with boundary. Kleiner and Lott indepedently and simultanously proved ...
متن کاملThe Volume of Hyperbolic Alternating Link Complements
A bigon region in a link diagram is a complimentary region of the link projection having two crossings in its boundary. A twist is a connected collection of bigon regions arranged in a row, which is maximal in the sense that it is not part of a longer row of bigons. A single crossing adjacent to no bigon regions is also a twist. The twist number t(D) of a diagram D is its number of twists. (See...
متن کاملSpline Orbifolds
In order to obtain a global principle for modeling closed surfaces of arbitrary genus, first hyperbolic geometry and then discrete groups of motions in planar geometries of constant curvature are studied. The representation of a closed surface as an orbifold leads to a natural parametrization of the surfaces as a subset of one of the classical geometries S, E and H. This well known connection c...
